YMCA of Greater Vancouver Youth Employment Program: Youth Focus Group

YMCA are reaching out to the Greater Vancouver’s Youth Employment team! They will be hosting a virtual youth focus group on Tuesday, August 17 for youth in the GVRD and FV. They are inviting all youth between the ages of 15-30 to discuss youth employment services and their needs as youth job-seekers.

Intercultural Mindset for Youngpreneurs
Intercultural Mindset for Youngpreneurs (I-My) with the Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society (PICS) is introducing a 22-week program that provides local youth between the ages of 15 and 29, group-based employability skills training, business concepts training, and job shadowing. Funded by Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training, the model consists of three interventions:
4 weeks of group-based Employment Skills and Business Concepts training – 30 hrs./week including Digital Literacy, Numeracy, Resume, Cover Letter and Interview skills, Business Planning, Operations, Marketing, Finance and Sales
1 week of Short Term Occupational Certification- OFA Level 1, Diversity and Inclusion Training, Food Safe 1, SuperHost and Business Seminars
12 weeks of Business Management & Entrepreneurial Mindset Training– including Business planning, Small Business Management, Principles of Marketing, etc.
5 weeks of Business Consultation, Mentoring and Job Shadowing
The Intercultural Mindset for Youngpreneurs (I-My) Program is intended to empower youth with self-employment mindset training, skills and network based on the principles of entrepreneurship to advance young leaders in any field.
Eligibility requirements include:
Youth ages 15-29
Canadian Citizen/PR/Refugee/Protected Person
Must have full time availability (Unemployed/precariously employed, not in school FT)
Resides in Metro Vancouver
Has interest in starting or growing their own business
*Daily stipend and completion bonus is also provided
Tentative Start Date is July 5, 2021

Rising Youth Grant Applications
We are pleased to inform you that Rising Youth Grants are open again for First-time applicants. All alumni can join the team of the new applicant and help them out with the project. New applicants should visit the bottom page of Covid-19 Response on our web site www.ylsbc.org to get project ideas. You may also see the attached document for details. Access to the vetted information source for a better understanding of the events
I think you all are well aware of the January 6th, 2021, incident in the USA. One of the contributing reasons in my mind is false narratives and lies being spread over all social media platforms. Generally, there are not enough checks and balances in the information being fed to the public through social media; it gradually could seep into our psyche and solidify our opinions as biases and prejudices over time. With the decline in the availability of traditional media outlets like newspapers and editorials, we find it hard to picture the situation accurately and with so much information out there, it becomes even more challenging.
Many parents like me still believe reputable newspapers that are unbiased are always a better source of information than social media. The journalists check the stories, and editors verify them for correctness; therefore, these newspapers are a better source among all news forms available to us.
However, with a decline in readership of printed newspapers due to loss of advertisement revenue, many newspapers bring out digital versions for which they are not paid. They are forced to compete with inaccurate sources released via google etc., for free. Australia has passed a law for these digital companies to pay for the content created by new news media companies, which Google etc., are resisting.
As a leadership organization, our youth should have a balanced outlook and review both sides of the coin before making an informed decision. Many of them in high school years should start increasing their awareness of world events in general and Canada in particular. Therefore, we as adults must work hard to direct their attention to a better source for news and bring those resources to them. Furthermore, we must also teach them how to do background checks on authors/reporters to understand an article’s perspective based on an author's neutrality or biases. As youth are more used to digital media, thus possibly tapping into an untested information source, I suggest we bring them a reputed newspapers' digital content to read.
Suppose they spend at least a few hours scanning the digital newspaper, they will remain well informed, and in two to three years, when they appear for work, univ admission interview, etc., they will stand out and increase their chances of being hired or admitted.
So, my proposal is as follows:
Families, if they would like, take out a digital subscription of Vancouver Sun as per ad below $14/month.
Or Join YLSBC's group subscription. If you may confirm your interest, I will share login information. At any given time, five people can access the content.
Further:
Please see below a full-page ad by Vancouver Sun to local MP's to pass a law just like Australia to force Google/YouTube to pay for content of these newspapers, so they have the income to stay afloat and keep journalists on the payroll. I am looking for a or team of youth who could draft a petition to local MP to bring this issue to their party's caucus and pass a law. That petition template can be used by parents/youth to write to their local MP.
Please review the above and show leadership for our youth to flourish with the right knowledge and balance views to make the necessary changes.
